Senator Catherine Muyeka Mumma is seasoned lawyer who has spent decades dedicated to championing for human rights and contributing to shaping policies across public, nonprofit, and private sectors. Her extensive experience includes roles as State Counsel, Commissioner for the Kenya National Human Rights Commission, and member of both the Independent Review Commission and the Constitution Implementation Commission, where she played a key role in implementing Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
Currently, as a Nominated Senator representing women, Senator Mumma advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) through policy development and oversight. She is also a member of the Speaker’s Panel, the Justice, Legal and Human Rights Committee, Vice-chairperson of the Devolution and Inter-Governmental Relations Committee, Deputy Chair of the Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association and Kenya Women Senators Association and participates in parliamentary caucuses focused on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Senator has been:
- A former special advisor to the Council of Governors’ subcommittee of health.
- Active in party politics as a long-serving, life-member of the ODM Party since its inception.
- The chairperson of the internal party Taskforce that audited the party’s performance in the 2017 General Elections.
- A former chairperson of the ODM National Election Board who heralded significant internal party electoral reforms and stewarded the first nation-wide use of electronic (paper-less) voting in Kenya
- A champion of rural agri-preneurship as the catapult to achieving food security, (particularly in the Nyanza and Western-Kenya regions).
